One big advantage of DTH is that it can reach even inaccessible areas as there is no need for cables or cable operators. Using DTH, a consumer can also scan many more channels. Although the same connection can be used for multiple TV sets, each set will require its own set-top-box. If you opt for DTH, you won’t also need to have a new STB every time you move to a new city.
The quality of picture one gets using DTH is better than that of cable TV. It offers stereophonic sound effects. DTH also offers users the advantage of interactive TV services such as movie-on-demand, Internet access, video conferencing and e-mail.
It has been observed that the system (cable or DTH) that is introduced earlier in a country usually plays the dominant role. For example, DTH developed in Europe before cable and it now controls almost 80% of the total number of subscribers in the continent.
In the United States, cable arrived first and it controls the subscriber base in the country.
The cable system is now firmly entrenched in India and is also growing quite rapidly.
Although DTH would certainly to some extent cut into the present cable subscriber base,
the middle class people are most likely to stick to their familiar cable operators. DTH, in all probability, would remain an up-market premium product.
